Professor Michelle Laboy from the School of Architecture is seeking two research assistants to work together with the Latrobe Prize interdisciplinary team from architecture, engineering and planning, on a project on participatory modeling of green infrastructure. These two research assistants will be responsible for various tasks including: conducting literature review on impacts of green infrastructure for different environmental hazards, conducting field surveys in person (this task will be done in pairs) to identify and map characteristics of urban areas such as urban canopy coverage, ground cover, and evidence of flooding; drawing site sections at points of interest or change along a corridors or study areas, and identify current changes through construction or notice of development; and throughout all of that, some filming of urban spaces in the study, as well as filming of interviews and workshops, with film editing if possible. In the near future there may be opportunities for some design and representation work, participation in community workshops, etc. The positions are scheduled to start as soon as possible, and there could be opportunities to extend into the summer. Successful candidates would have a background in any of the following fields: architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and/or civil engineering. Students from other fields would be considered if they have some relevant related knowledge to contribute, which should be explained in the statement of interest and to be explored in an interview. Basic skills in CAD and/or GIS are preferred but not strictly required. Knowledge of ESRI maps app would be a plus. The positions can range from 5-10 hours per week. Positions will be paid, with hourly rate depending on experience and skill level.
